Kurni: A Cult Wine from the Marche

Welcoming the 2022 vintage of “Kurni”

Having reached an incredible cult-like status throughout the world, the Kurni wine from Azienda Agricola Oasi degli Angeli is one we’re proud to be able to offer here in Australia. The Montepulciano is intense but balanced, a result of natural, traditional ethos alongside focused modern winemaking, proving it difficult to stylistically label this wine and its winemaker.

Marco Casolanetti is the fifth generation of his family to live and tend to their 17 hectares of land in in the heart of Piceno, sitting very far south along the coast of Marche. He is the first generation to focus the property on their old Montepulciano and Bordo (the local Grenache) grape vines and increase the vine plantings. Together with his partner of many years, Eleonora Rossi, a graduate engineer and former wine critic, the winegrower persistently studied and carefully researched in order to develop a completely new type of viticulture and cellar management.

Marco is a visionary; a man with an engineer’s brain and a winemaker’s passion. As with the generations that preceded him, he is a natural in the winery as he is in the fields. Vines are grown in remarkably high densities (one vineyard has 50,000 vines per hectare!) and produce very low yields per plant, which gives incredible focus and purity to the grapes on this alluvial soil. In the cellar, only new French Grenier oak is used, no sulphur until bottling, and ample time in bottle before release.

The Oasi degli Angeli winery represents one of the excellencies of the Marche region, as well as Italian excellency abroad, encompassing the finesse of tradition and the passion for innovation.

As always, Marco & Eleonora have allocated us a small but mighty allotment of this prized cuvee. Please reply to us at info@dispensingsolutions.com.au or contact your local rep now to confirm your 2022 Kurni while it’s still available!

“Marco Casolanetti of Oasi degli Angeli continues to test the boundaries of what’s possible with Montepulciano.”

“Black as night, the 2022 Kurni takes no prisoners. It smolders up from the glass with an intense array of wood spice, smoke, dark chocolate, tobacco and raspberry preserves. This is an especially textural Kurni, with a velvety feel and depths of ultra-ripe red and black fruits carried across a stream of vibrant acidity. The 2022 leaves the palate drenched in primary concentration as a pretty inner sweetness lingers, nicely offset by silken tannins. While large-scale in proportion, the Kurni maintains very fine balance.” - Eric Guido, Vinous, 94 pts
